The Worlds Build You’re Copying May Already Be a Patch Behind Ranked

The match is live today, but the build is from an earlier patch. Before copying a Worlds setup into ranked, check three things: the patch, the role, and the job the pro was solving.

The Worlds Build You’re Copying May Already Be a Patch Behind Ranked

The short answer: Worlds 2026 is played on patch 26.20, and ranked moved to 26.21 on October 20. A build you watched yesterday can belong to an older version of the champion. Even on the same patch, the pro may be solving a different problem than you are. Copy the reason before you copy the items.

The short version
  • Riot named 26.20 the Worlds patch. Live ranked has had 26.21 since October 20.
  • 26.21 changed Varus in a way aimed at top lane W max, not bot lane Q max. Same champion, different patch for each role.
  • Before copying: write down the patch, role, opponent and job the build was solving.
The belief

“If a pro builds it at Worlds, it’s the best build right now. They play the newest patch, so I should copy it straight into ranked.”

✕ Verdict: Misleading
The reality

Tournaments lock a patch so teams aren’t hit by changes mid-event. Riot’s 26.20 notes open with “the Worlds patch is here!”, and ranked moved on to 26.21 two weeks later. A build broadcast today is a build for a game you can’t queue for. The gap right now:

Which Patch Is Which

PatchReleasedWhere it is played
26.20October 6, 2026Worlds 2026 (Riot: “the Worlds patch”)
26.21October 20, 2026Live ranked, normals, everything you queue for

One more trap: Riot’s patch notes now cover several modes, with separate sections for ARAM: Mayhem, Classic and Arena. A champion listed under one of those did not necessarily change on Summoner’s Rift ranked. Read the section header before you read the numbers.

Worked Example: Varus on 26.21

Varus is the cleanest example this month, because Riot spelled out who the change was for. In the 26.21 notes, the team says it is “mainly looking to snipe top lane Varus, where he tends to max W, unlike the more common Q max in bot.”

So one patch line lands differently by role:

SetupSkill maxWhat 26.21 is aimed at
Top lane VarusW firstThe main target. Riot reduced W’s per-stack and missing-health damage.
Bot lane VarusQ firstNot the target. Q’s damage scaling was reworked and its channel bonus raised from 50% to 70%. An October 22 mid-patch update then raised Q’s minimum damage.

If you watched a top Varus at Worlds and copied it into bot, you copied a setup from the old patch, for the wrong role, built around the ability that just got cut. Three mismatches in one build.

The flip side matters just as much. “Varus got nerfed” is the wrong headline for a bot player. “Intended for top” doesn’t mean “no effect on bot” either: the abilities changed for everyone, so test your own pattern before you decide.

Copy the Problem, Not the Items

A pro build screenshot strips out everything that made it right: the opponent, the lane, the timing of each purchase and the team’s plan. A defensive first item that was perfect into one specific lane bully looks like a universal recommendation once it lands on a build site.

Before you copy anything, fill in this card:

VerdictCopy only if the job matches

If the job matches, a pro build is excellent evidence. Pros spend hours testing what you don’t have time to test. If it doesn’t match, the build can be perfect and still wrong for you.

Pro Tuning Isn’t Solo Queue

Pro play rewards things solo queue can’t use reliably: five players with set plans, perfect follow-up, deep vision. Champions and builds that need that coordination look stronger on stage than they are in a lobby of strangers. That isn’t a flaw in the pros. It’s a different game.

Worlds uses the newest patch.

Worlds 2026 is on 26.20. Ranked has been on 26.21 since October 20.

Pro builds are the best builds.

For their role, opponent and team plan, often yes. Your game needs the same conditions for the same answer.

One champion can be changed for one role.

Riot’s 26.21 notes aimed the Varus changes at top lane W max, not bot lane Q max.

Quick check

You play bot Varus. You saw a pro top Varus build at Worlds. What should you check first?

  1. Nothing, pro builds are always right
  2. The patch and the role it was built for
  3. Which skin the pro used

It is a 26.20 top-lane setup built around W, the ability 26.21 aimed at. Your bot Q-max game is a different problem.

FAQ

What patch is Worlds 2026 played on?

Patch 26.20. Riot’s notes for 26.20 describe it as the Worlds patch.

What patch is League ranked on now?

Patch 26.21, released October 20, 2026.

Should I copy pro builds in solo queue?

Only when your patch, role, opponent and the build’s purpose match. Otherwise use the reasoning, not the item list.

Was Varus nerfed in 26.21?

Riot aimed the changes at top lane Varus, who maxes W. Bot lane Varus usually maxes Q, whose scaling was reworked and then raised again in an October 22 mid-patch update. Check your own setup before calling it a nerf.
