ADCs: Stop Looking for the Enemy Carry Until You Can Answer Their Threats

You win lane, then die first in every fight trying to reach their carry. The fix is not "stand further back". It is knowing which two threats you are playing around before the fight starts.

ADCs: Stop Looking for the Enemy Carry Until You Can Answer Their Threats

The short answer: your target is chosen by the threats you have already answered, not by the enemy you most want dead. Their carry may be the reason your team is losing. Walking past two live threats to hit them makes you the next reason. Name the threats first, keep the tool that answers them, and the path to their carry opens on its own.

The short version
  • Before a fight, name the two enemy threats that can reach you, and how you answer each.
  • Don’t spend Flash or your dash for a little early damage. That’s the tool your plan relies on.
  • Hit what you can hit safely now, and move forward once a threat is spent.
The belief

“As ADC I have to kill their carry. If I just stand behind my team I’ll do nothing, so I go for the backline.”

✕ Verdict: Misleading
The reality

Their carry is the best target only if you can reach them and survive the attempt. Usually two enemy tools stand in the way: an engage that can land on you and a flank or burst that is waiting for you. As Tomo of Dignitas put it, “just because they’re the ADC, doesn’t mean the game revolves around you.” Before any fight, answer:

2 threatswhat can reach you, and what you’ll do about each

“Stand Behind Your Team” Isn’t a Plan

Every ADC has heard it. It’s a location, not a plan. A long-range engage can still hit you behind your team. A flanker can come from the side. And standing so far back that you never attack is just a slower way to lose the fight.

A real plan answers three things you can say out loud:

  • Which threat is aimed at me?
  • What do I use when it comes?
  • What changes once it is gone?

That third question is why good ADCs look passive for ten seconds and then suddenly walk forward. They aren’t guessing. The threat they were waiting on just got used.

List Threats by How They Reach You

Damage numbers don’t decide who threatens you. Reach does.

Threat typeHow it reaches youTypical answer
Hard engageA hook, charm, knock-up or long dash onto the backlineStay out of its range until it’s used, keep your dash or Flash for it
Flank / assassinFrom fog or the side, once fighting startsKeep your support or a peel ability close; ward the flank
Poke / artilleryLong-range damage before the fightDon’t stand in the lane it covers; fight fast or not at all
Frontline in your faceWalks at you, slowlyKite it. It is often the target you can hit safely

Most fights have one or two real threats to you. Find them during the 30 seconds before the objective spawns, not during the fight.

The Flash You Spent for 200 Damage

Here is the most common ADC mistake in mid-elo, illustrated rather than recorded.

  1. Fight starts at DragonYour frontline is trading with theirs. Their engage support hasn’t been seen.
  2. You dash forwardTo land a few extra autos on their frontline. A bit of damage, a lot further forward.
  3. Engage lands on youThe support was waiting. Your dash is on cooldown.
  4. You die first“No peel, no protection, ADC has no agency.”

Now the other version. Same fight. You stay at max range on their frontline, keep the dash, and when the hook comes, you dodge or dash out of the follow-up. The engage is gone. Now you walk forward and their carry is in range, with nothing left to stop you.

Waiting doesn’t guarantee a carry performance. But optional early damage has a price: the defensive option it uses up.

Waiting Is Not the Same as Hiding

Don’t turn this into “do nothing until it’s safe”. There is nearly always something useful to do while you respect the threat:

  • Hit the nearest target you can hit from safety, usually their frontline.
  • Shift your angle so the threat has to walk further to reach you.
  • Stand where your support can protect you.
  • Wait a second or two for an obvious trigger: the engage cast, the flank showing.

If you can’t name a single useful action, your position is wrong, not just cautious.

Freeze-Frame Practice

Pick one fight from your last game where you died early. Pause just before it starts, and finish two sentences before you play it: “The threats to me were ___ and ___.” and “My answer to the first was ___.” Then watch. You’ll usually find you spent the answer before the threat arrived.

Freeze frame 1

Their engage support is missing from vision. Their frontline is in range. Your dash is up. What do you do?

  1. Dash forward for more damage on the frontline
  2. Hit the frontline from max range and keep the dash
  3. Walk past the frontline to their carry

The missing support is your threat. Keep the dash until it shows, and hit what you can reach safely.

Freeze frame 2

Their engage just whiffed and is on cooldown. Their assassin is dead. What now?

  1. Keep standing at max range
  2. Step forward and hit their carry
  3. Back off and wait for the next fight

Both threats are answered. This is the moment to go in, not ten seconds ago.

The ADC should always focus the enemy carry.

Only when you can reach them and survive. Otherwise hit the target you can reach safely.

Just stand behind your team.

It’s a start. A plan also names the threats and what you’ll do when each one is used.

Your positioning should change during the fight.

Once a threat is spent, the safe spot moves forward.

FAQ

Who should the ADC target in teamfights?

The most valuable target you can reach and survive. Often that’s the frontline at first, then the carry once the threats to you are used.

Why do I win lane as ADC but lose teamfights?

Lane is a 2v2 with simple threats. Teamfights add engage and flank threats. Plan for the two that can reach you before the fight starts.

Should I Flash forward as ADC?

Rarely for damage. Your Flash and dash are usually what keeps you alive when the engage lands. Spend them on the threat, not the chase.

How do I stop dying first as ADC?

Find where the enemy engage is before the fight, stay out of its range until it’s used, and keep your escape for it.
