Why is League of Legends Full of Incorrect Abilities Description?

October 7, 2024

As a long-time player I've witnessed numerous changes to champions over the years. Recently, I've noticed some persistent inaccuracies in ability descriptions that have gone uncorrected for quite some time. Today, I'd like to highlight two specific examples: Viktor's Q ability and Malzahar's W ability.

Viktor's Q Ability:

The in-game description states: "Viktor's next attack within 3.5 seconds deals additional magic damage (scaling for the ability)." However, this is incorrect. In reality, the ability doesn't add magic damage to the attack like some other abilities in the game. Instead, it converts the entire attack into magic damage, similar to certain passive abilities. Interestingly, the game's wiki correctly describes this mechanic.

Additionally, I've observed that the ability consistently deals 1 less damage than stated when tested in the practice tool.

Malzahar's W Ability:

The ability description reads: "Malzahar summons a voidling plus an additional... voidlings deal an additional 9 = (5 - 65 +40% bonus AD +20% bonus AP)." The confusing part is that the description mentions dealing 12 to 20 damage per level, but this isn't reflected in the scaling like other abilities in the game. It's unclear what the "additional" damage is referring to - is it in addition to the 12 to 20 base damage? The wiki combines both the base damage and scalings into a single source, which contradicts the in-game description.

While these may seem like minor discrepancies, they can be frustrating for players who pay close attention to ability mechanics. Once noticed, it's difficult to unsee these inaccuracies.

Community Feedback:

Some community members have pointed out additional tooltip mistakes and bugs. One player mentioned maintaining a list of such issues, hoping they'll be addressed in the future.

Another interesting point raised was the inconsistent use of "bonus AP" in ability descriptions, as the game generally uses total AP for calculations (with a few exceptions).

Other players have shared their own experiences with confusing ability descriptions, such as Kled's W ability, which previously had a misleading cooldown description. Fortunately, this particular issue was resolved in a recent update.
